If you are a cloud provider, whether you are pure play or an internal IT department, it is very interesting to know who is buying cloud services, and why. In a recent survey by PB7 sponsored by EuroCloud Netherlands and others, a group of Dutch companies was interviewed about their motivations and hesitations around cloud computing. The survey's results were quite a bit more interesting than the usual lot. In this article I have cherry picked a few observations from the larger survey. The majority of companies are using cloud computing these days, and this includes government organizations by the way....

Cloud Computing is no longer an option, but a reality in the IT landscape of almost all organizations. At the same time cloud computing has a lot of variants and choices. These choices are relevant for the IT strategy, and in some cases even the company strategy. Cloud computing will turn the IT-value chain upside down. That will lead to dramatic changes in the way hardware and software is being marketed and managed. These changes will be most profound for IT departments and value added resellers (VARs), but computer manufacturers will feel the heat too. To illustrate this point we can take a high level view of where servers are being deployed. In 2012 Intel reported that three big server manufacturers no longer account for 75% of their turnover in server processors (Intel confirms decline of server giants) . The new kids on the block are the cloud...

The number one concern cited for avoiding cloud computing is security. And there is a reason for that. Cloud providers have demonstrated some spectacular failures in the past, including Amazon’s near total shutdown of an entire region, Dropbox’s authentication snafu, and innumerous cloud providers that go belly-up. However, in the long run, cloud computing is destined to become more secure than in-house IT. I will briefly describe two dynamics in the industry that point in that direction, with substantiating evidence. First, good cloud providers are getting better, as they have more staff available to do security, and bigger economies of scale,...

Adoption of Cloud computing is growing year on year. It’s quite evident by looking the nominations in the Cloud category (as part of ICMG Architecture Excellence Awards). The benefits are not just operational  efficiency and cost reductions, but also the direct increase in the revenue in  several cases. Utilization of cloud infrastructure, virtualization is becoming  main-stream irrespective of the industry. In fact, we are witnessing the deployment  of Cloud backbone in Telecom, Banking & Finance, Construction, Government etc. Also, there is technology race among the IT vendors to develop the tools  and utilities to ensure that migration and adoption is smoother, efficient and economical,...
